Tech Plan for Week of November 8 - November 12 (Week 4)

This week we will continue a project build of our Rube Goldberg Machine energy conservation activity. An RGM is an overly complex system of interconnected mechanisms designed to perform a simple task. There will be a very short briefing lesson at the beginning of each class, followed by a 30-40 minute block of time for groups to plan and construct their devices.

What is the main idea:
OBJECTIVE
Students will learn new how the elasticity of materials can provide energy sources for their RGM.
Students will learn how the radial position of a point on a wheel/arc effects its rotation speed/momentum.
Students will learn that an inclined plane is used to move an object up (NOT down) a positive slope and that as effort is reduced, distance traveled is increased.

Students will learn that documenting expenses is an essential part of any production process.
What students will learn:
ACTIVITY
Working in small groups students will consider the use of rubber bands, balloons, springs, or bent sticks as energy sources as they construct their RGMs.
Working in small groups students will design and develop a wheel & axle, gear assembly, or pendulum for their RGM.

Working in small groups students will design and develop an inclined plane for their RGM.

Using an expense ledger each student will document all materials used in their RGM so far.
What students will do:
RESOURCES
WMS-GTT-SOT, copy of planning document, financial planner, and scoring rubric. Various rubber bands, balloons, springs, mousetraps, and long thin sticks.
WMS-GTT-SOT, copy of planning document, financial planner, and scoring rubric. Various size jar lids, corrugated cardboard, string, and dead batteries.

WMS-GTT-SOT, Ramp materials such as 12" to 16" lath wood, popsicle sticks, matchbox raceway, hose, tubing, etc.
