Gateway to Technology - Science of Technology
Gateway To Technology (GTT) Science of Technoly is a 9-week course from Project Lead the Way curriculum used nationwide in middle schools as part of their pre-engineering programs. The Science of Technology Unit introduces students to Applied Physics, students will identify simple machines and determine their appropriate use and mechanical advantage. They will learn about energy, energy conservation, and potential and kinetic energy by designing, building, and testing a model roller coaster. Students will then learn about systems and subsystems and have the opportunity to create the following products: Rube Goldberg device, Compressed Air Dragster, Magnetic Levitation Vehicles, and a working model Amusement Park Ride. Students will create physical prototype models and documentation to solve real world engineering and technical problems. Safety will be emphasized along with an awareness of how through a systematic process of design, modeling, and fabrication on real hand and power tools products can be built to fulfill societal demands. Emphasis will be placed on students investigating content and activities from the following Big Ideas areas. Big Ideas and Activities for GTT Science of Technology in 2010-2011
Lesson 1 Mechanics of Motion – Students investigate and build technology innovations such as simple and compound machines and determine their societal, cultural, economic, political, and environmental consequences. They will then have an opportunity to design and build an energy conservation system (Rube Goldberg Device) which transfers energy through a series of simple machines and energy transfer mechanisms.

Lesson 2 Energy Conservation Systems – In a series of activities students will explore, document, and learn about renewable and nonrenewable energy sources as they build and experiment with models representing hydro, wind, geothermal, fossil fuel, solar, biomass, and nuclear power generation. Students learn through application the economic issues of scarcity of resources and the societal concerns associated with energy usage and waste products.

Lesson 3 Applied Chemistry – Students will explore chemical engineering through variety of activities intended to relate the difference between a chemist and a chemical engineer and how materials can be manipulated chemically to produce products, such as food, adhesives, propellants, and waste treatment.

Lesson 4 Prototype Fabrication – Using the knowledge gained from previous lessons students will design, draw, fabricate, and assemble actual models of the following projects: a model skyscraper, a magnetic levitation vehicle, and a compressed air dragster.

Grading Policy
Grades will be determined by participation in daily class work, activities, and occasional homework assignments, but most of the grade will be based on demonstrated mastery of the subject on daily classwork assessments. A wide variety of extra credit and enrichment activities are available giving students ample opportunities to improve grades reduced by absence/illness or merely to pursue additional optional enrichment. Homework will be assigned 1-2 times a week and due dates will be indicated on the assignment. Late work may be subject to a 15% reduction in possible points and will not be accepted within one week of progress report/report card cut-off dates.

Supplied by Student: Pencils, Agenda/planner, PRIDE card, Writer’s notebook, 1 sheet lined paper (40 sheets for quarter).
