Tech Plan for Week of March 14 - March 18

This week we begin an investigation of technology's impact on society as we build and experiment with the first 2 of six simple machines that have changed the way humans work by giving us mechanical advantage over loads.

What is the main idea:
OBJECTIVE
Students will be introduced to a course overview and a review of class academic and behavioral expectations.
The definitions of science versus technology and how people are responsible for both the positive and negative impacts of each.
A system is a group of inter-related components designed to achieve a desired goal. Systems include input, output, and sometimes feedback.
A lever is a rigid bar used to gain mechanical advantage over a load using a pivot point (fulcrum). There are 3 different classes of levers.
A wheel is a rotating lever arm used to gain mechnical advantage by changing rotary motion into linear motion.
What students will learn:
ACTIVITY
Students will be introduced to the new WMS-GTT-SOT wikispace to familiarize them with accessing the digital archive.
Students will be introduced to four areas of technology and investigate the positive and negative aspects of examples in each area on Act1-1 WS.
Students will be introduced to systems and subsystems and complete a worksheet which explains open and closed loop system comparisons.
Students will observe how various levers effect applied effort in moving loads, then make changes to increase mechanical advantage.
Students will observe how wheel diameters effect the movement of loads, then make changes to increase mechanical advantage.

Access to WMS-GTT-SOT on internet. Copies of GTT-SOT syllabus, safety, and media release documents.
GTT SOT Activity1-1 Technology Impacts Google or Wikipedia Web access for research.

Students will sign and date the GTT SOT syllabus, safety, and media release documents and acquire parent signatures as HW #1.
