Tech Plan for Week of October 25 - October 29

This week we continue our investigation of the six simple machines that have changed the way humans work by giving us mechanical advantage over loads by working with the inclined plane, the wedge, pulleys, and the screw. We will prepare for our Rube Goldberg energy consevation activity by assembling our 3 foot towers and use Autodesk drawings to plan our designs.

What is the main idea:
OBJECTIVE
Students will learn how incline planes and pulleys provide mechanical advantage by reducing the effort necessary to move a load.
Students will learn how the wedge and the screw provide mechanical advantage while changing the direction of applied forces.
Students will learn how kinetic and potential energy can be transfered in a system, but never destroyed.

What students will learn:
ACTIVITY
Students will be introduced to the inclined plane and pulley mechanisms and observe how effort is decreased when moving a load.
Students will be introduced to the wedge and screw mechanisms and observe how the direction of applied forces is changed.
Students will be introduced to the Rube Goldberg Towers and see how potential energy is provided by gravity and will be converted to kinetic energy of motion while moving down.

What students will need:
ASSESSMENT
Students will predict the effort (greater, same, or less) necessary to move a load on the inclined plane for 5 performance points.
Students will predict the direction of applied and resultant forces to move a load using the wedge and screw for 5 performance points.

Students will show their preliminary plan on an AutoDesk Inventor Drawing for 5 performance points.
